Tips On Choosing A Contractor Who Is Right For You...

  • Do your homework!
    • Call and visit references. A contractor should provide you with several references.
    • Ask about not only quality of the work, but also the contractor's reliability and work habits.
  • Look for red flags!
    • When interviewing contractors, take into account their personal appearance. They do not need to look like Brad Pitt, but they should not look as if they just stumbled out of a tavern.
    • If their vehicle is a mess, they appear unorganized and or unprofessional; chances are the job will be too.
    • Did they show up on time for the interview? If not, did they call to say they would be running late? How they respond to an interview is a good indication of how they will be on the job.
    • Did the contractor take thorough measurements and notes regarding the project?  If not, it will lead to problems later.
    • Your contractor should be bonded and insured. Do not even consider them if they are not.
  • Other Considerations
    • A good contractor is someone with an artistic sense who wants to get involved in the project, not just get hired.
    • If a contractor comes to you by way of referral you should still check out a few other references. If this is the contractor you want to hire but he can't get to you for awhile, WAIT! Chances are you have been waiting awhile anyways. If a contractor is too busy to get to you right away that is usually a good sign.
    • Beware of a contractor who wants you to pick up materials or have you do part of the work which can result in future problems of the job. You will not save money by doing part of the work for yourself.
    • Avoid paying out too large of a deposit for the job. If materials such as windows, cabinets, doors, etc need to be ordered, find out what the necessary deposit is. You should not pay more money out than what the material and labor add up to.

Your contractor should provide you with a thorough quote and have considered all facets of the job. Your contractor should offer ideas and suggestions. You want someone who is as excited about your project as you are.
